Conchita Wurst is coming to the end of what will almost certainly be the busiest and most exciting year of her life.

This time last year, she was a relatively unknown Eurovision Song Contest hopeful. Winning the competition transformed her overnight into the best-known drag queen in the world.

Now Vienna, Austria is preparing to host the 60th Eurovision on 23 May and Conchita’s reign will come to an end.

But her incredible journey is far from over. We caught up with her to find out more.

Will life change for you after this year’s Eurovision?

I think everyday is a change. So definitely it will. I am very excited about the experience after Eurovision because obviously with the Eurovision win in this year, everything went quite easily because everyone was interested and I was really in a very good position.

So after Eurovision, maybe my artistic life will start to be in real time. My album will be released on 15 May and that is going to be very exciting because I am going to do a little promo tour after Eurovision and we will see how that will end up.

Is it going to be hard for you to give up your crown?

That’s a funny question because I’ve been asked a lot. We have recorded a 60th anniversary show for the BBC and there were winners from many years [joining us].

We will stay winners and we will always be the winner of that year. So I don’t have to give up my crown. I have my crown. I have to build a new one.

Do you have a favorite from this year’s Eurovision finalists? Are you allowed to say?

I am allowed to say but I wouldn’t.

When you were growing up, was there a Eurovision winner who inspired you?

Celine Dion [1988 winner]. And not just because of Eurovision.

When I was a little kid there was no YouTube, so I experienced Celine Dion years later. Seeing her sing perfectly at the age of 12 is just overwhelming and outstanding.

You experience artists growing and getting better and better and better but she started flawless. That’s something you want to reach. I can’t reach flawless. Hopefully I am getting better and better and one day I will be close to her – but I will never reach her. She is really inspiring to reach your goals.

RuPaul’s Drag Race did a bearded challenge this season. What did you think of it?

I heard that, I think that was great. I really loved it. I don’t know if they did it because of me. But they looked fabulous. I loved that challenge.

On that subject, any top tips for a luxuriant beard?

Just buy brown eye shadow and paint it.

Vienna is hosting Eurovision, what is the one thing a visitor should see?

So many places. You have to make sure you see something from the historical side. You have to go to all the restaurants and famous coffee shops. Then you definitely have to make a party. And then you need to eat something because you will have a hangover, the day after you have to have brunch.
