As we reported, the Senate of Italy accepted a bill last week, according to which same-sex couples are allowed to get married civilly. There was also a special point according to which they are allowed to adopt biological children of each other. Now this law exists not only on paper.
The tribunal of Rome allowed two lesbian women to adopt each other’s biological daughters. The adopted girls will have a common double surname, but from the point of view of law they won’t be sisters. The court explained such a decision as an adoption in special cases.
The gay right groups in Italy claim, that they are not satisfied with such a decision, because it does not show the equality of same-sex and heterosexual couples in rights to adopt children, and these two women are not legally protected. But it is already a big step for the country.
