Roy Cooper calls this law a national embarrassment, which is shameful and unconstitutional. : ‘We’ve got to remember here the overriding concern that this new law provides for broad-based discrimination. This shameful new law has brought (a lawsuit) upon us. Discrimination is wrong, period. The governor and the legislature should repeal this law.’ says the Attorney General.

House Bill 2, quickly passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Pat McCrory, bans all local LGBT rights ordinances in the state. The rush to enact the law was in order to override an ordinance in Charlotte that would have allowed transgender people to use the bathroom of their gender identification.
HB2 calls for facilities to be based on the gender someone was assigned at birth. The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the state over the new law and more lawsuits are expected to be filed.
