The Central Election Commission of Georgia rejected the initiative group to hold a nationwide referendum on the legalization of same-sex marriage in the country.
The authorities argue that the question that is asked to respond to citizens in a plebiscite can be solved only by creating “a new constitutional law and is contrary to the electoral code.” The question reminded sounded as follows: – “Do you agree that the changes were made to the constitution that marriage is a union between a man and a woman to create a family?”.
To solve the issue of same-sex marriage in a referendum at the end of March 2016 invited the opposition. So members of the opposition party “United National Movement” tried to delay the adoption of amendments to the Constitution to ban same-sex marriages.
The initiator of such amendments is the ruling coalition “Georgian Dream”. 48-year-old Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili in early March, proposed to amend article 36 of the Constitution. They will be assigned the status of marriage different sexes. Kvirikashvili explained the need for change, “the protection of such important values such as marriage.”
