An NRA-affiliated group are going to attract the attention of female and LGBT audience with new anti-gun control television adverts. The Coalition for Civil Liberties is hoping it’ll help them to defeat the Safety for All Act of 2016, backed by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, which will require background checks for the sale of ammunition. The group opposes the new proposal, saying it’s an attempt to limit the sale of ammunition, which will make it harder for people to defend themselves, TIME reports.
The first ad, set to be released in California on Monday (June 6), will feature a woman walking through a dark parking structure. When an assailant approaches her, she tries to grab a handgun to defend herself, but the hammer drops on an empty chamber because the gun isn’t loaded. The ad then runs the slogan, “Take Away Our Rights, Take Away Our Life.” The second ad will hit screens on Wednesday and will feature a transgender character in a similar situation.
Richard Grenell, the GOP operative behind the ads, told TIME: “Because Gavin’s latest proposal goes too far and tramples on personal freedoms, he has opened up a real opportunity for those of us who believe in more civil liberties. Gavin is losing the traditional Democrat coalitions like women, the working class and the LGBT community who are challenging the progressive idea that the government should be the center of our lives.”
