India blocks foreign gay couples access to surrogate mothers

Ministry of Internal Affairs of India came up with recommendations that will put an end to the dream of many gay couples to become parents with the help of surrogate mothers in India. The recommendations say that only the couple consisting of a man and a woman, who had been in a marriage for at least two years, will be able to gain access to surrogacy.

Interior Ministry notes that foreigners coming to India in search of surrogate mothers, no longer able to enter on tourist visas. If they meet the criteria set by the Ministry, they will be given “medical visa”.

In recent years, many gay couples from Europe, USA and Australia became parents through surrogate mothers in India. They used the fact that the laws were rather vague, and the cost of such services is much lower than in the West.
