Turkey’s Ambassador to Latvia Hayret Jalava Khairy said that Latvia “is not Europe” and cited as evidence of the attitude of citizens of this country to marriage equality.
“I do not think that most people in Latvia supports gay marriage, as people do it in Europe. You can hold a referendum to see that Latvia is quite different from Netherlands, for example -.. I remember a year ago, the Dutch ambassador to Turkey wanted to participate in the march LBTG for the rights, they needed police protection on both sides”,- said the Turkish Ambassador to the newspaper. “… We can not say that Latvia is Europe”, – said Khairy Hayret Jalava and cited the example of Russia, India and Turkey.
Turkish envoy expressed the opinion that “Latvians hardly willing to uphold the values that the major European countries support”.
In Turkey, under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom the military tried to overthrow unsuccessfully a few days ago, the human rights situation for LGBT people is getting worse every year. Erdogan holds a steady course of Islamization of the country. The last two years the gay parades are shooten with rubber bullets, water cannons and tear gas.
