In the evening of 21 June the gay-parade in ancient Jerusalem has collected more than 15 000 people. The march was the most populous in the entire history of the gay parades in the city. Hundreds of wishing could not get into the column, as the police have just finished ready-made identification bracelets.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Gay Pride event for the whole of Israel and said that members of the LGBT community are undetached part of society.
Many famous Israeli politicians, including – Interior Minister Gilad Erdan, opposition leader Isaac Herzog, a block co-chairman of “Zionist camp” Tzipi Livni, Knesset members from the left-wing Social Democrats (Meretz) – Zehava Gal-On, Michal Rozin and Tamar Zandberg came as well to support LGBT.
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has refused to take part in a gay parade, as he, in his opinion, “hurt the feelings of religious people”. But a few hours before the Mayor, together with the commander of the Jerusalem District Police Yoram Halevy, laid flowers at the place of death Shira Banki.
For the first time hundreds of representatives of the religious community participated in the march, as well as prominent rabbis of Reform and Conservative movements.
