Moulin Rouge is finally going to can-can its way to the stage in a theatrical version of the big screen musical. John Logan, best known for Skyfall and Gladiator, will write the book while Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson’s Alex Timbers will direct.
The Baz Lurhmann frenetic rock confection mixes songs from Nirvana to The Beatles to Dolly Parton.
Lurhmann praised the choices, saying the director had a ‘creative spirit’ and the writer ‘gifted’. ‘It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm,’ he said. The film will show an idealistic writer, originally played by Ewan McGregor, falling in love with courtesan Satine, originally played by Nicole Kidman. –
