Montreal will host LGBT summit during 2017 pride week

Montreal will play host next summer to an international conference on sexual diversity. The conference will be part of the city’s pride week and its organizers hope to sensitize people as to the importance of international solidarity with the LGBT community — it will focus on countries with large francophone populations. The provincial government is spending $300,000 to support the event, according to International Relations Minister Christine St-Pierre.She said Wednesday Quebec took this message of openness toward the rights of LGBT people to the Sommet de la Francophonie in Madagascar last month. She said it’s important to prevent bullying, particularly in schools, where “violence linked to homophobia and transphobia constitutes a fundamental obstacle to education.”
