Larry Steinbachek, the keyboardist for the 1980s British synthpop trio Bronski Beat, has passed away fastly – he could not resist cancer. All members of the group were openly gay and their songs often contained political commentary on gay-related issues. The band’s first single was telling a story o a gay boy leaving his family and his hometown. The group’s follow-up single with lyrics focused on anti-gay prejudice. It reached number six in the UK and the top 10 in Australia, Switzerland, Germany, France and the Netherlands. After a few more hits including a cover of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love with Marc Almond, Somerville left the group to become lead singer for The Communards.
