Pvt. Manning will be set free in May after Barack Obama decided to commute her sentence. However she will receive a “dishonourable discharge”, meaning that her entitlement to military benefits, including gender-transition care at military medical treatment facilities.
But the nature of her charge was not changed. She had been a candidate for gender-reassignment surgery, which would have been paid for under the Pentagon’s new policy for transgender troops.Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith said: “If Pvt. Manning is discharged with a dishonorable discharge, she will lose her entitlement to (military) benefits, including gender-transition care at (military) medical treatment facilities”. Manning tried yo appeal the decision, but if the appeal fails she with be discharged without a right for further consultation.
