Julie Hesmondhalgh known for her role in Coronation Street recalls that she cast for a trans role and it was a joke from producers which was not supposed to last longer than two weeks. But the audience liked tha character, so there was no other way for the producers than to keep it. “I wasn’t meant to be in Coronation Street for any longer than two weeks,” the actress told Stella Magazine,“The character of Hayley was originally written as a joke. It wasn’t a politically correct one, but this was back in 1998. The joke was that Roy Cropper (David Neilson) was going to go on a series of disastrous blind dates, one of them being with a man who had transgendered to a woman.”
“To me, that was it. You make people like this woman – understand her – and you say more than any political speech or lobbying,” the actress added. Two weeks of playing a trans character turned into 16 years. And even after so long period of time the audience was deeply upset when the character was gone.
