The transgender actress Laverne Cox urged people to look up Gavin Grimm at the Grammys last night. Introducing the performance of Lady Gaga and Metallica Cox used an opportunity to speak in support of Gavin Grimm who is going to appear in Supreme court next month.
The comments were a reference to Virginian transgender teen Gavin Grimm, whose school ordered him to use bathroom facilities according to the gender stated in his birth certificate, ignoring his current gender identity. Grimm sued the Gloucester County School Board with help from the American Civil Liberties Union, arguing that the policy infringed against the rights of transgender community. After a protracted court battle, his case is set to be heard by the Supreme Court – and is expected to set precedent for transgender people to be legally protected.
