Moonlight Way is in Liberty Hill neighborhood and the film events took place in the same district. A portion of Northwest 22nd Avenue in Miami’s Liberty Hill neighborhood has been re-christened Moonlight Way. The film director-screenwriter and co-screenwriter were both born there and spent their young years in that area. The street re-naming was approved unanimously by Miami-Dade County commissioners. A resolution sponsored by Commissioner Audrey E. Edmonson states that the film ‘evidences the possible heights of success for students from underserved communities and dysfunctional family backgrounds.’ Moonlight is the first LGBTI-themed film to ever win Oscar’s top prize and grossed just under $28 million at the US box office. It had a production budget of just $1.5 million. The main character is a young gay man of color brought up by a drug-addicted mother. He overcomes problems around him and in his own mind to finally understand who he is.
