In Florida was detained A 30-year-old Russian citizen Denis D., who sought refuge in California. He lives in the US since September 2014, hiding from homophobic persecution in his homeland.

The man was detained by the immigration authorities because of an expired visa after his trip to the Virgin Islands. For a month he has been in the detention center in Miami, despite waiting for a decision on the application for asylum.

The detainee has HIV infection. His lawyer says that the man receives the necessary medicine, but he needs the care of specialists. He also notes that the man has no criminal record and does not pose any danger to society.

The lawyer explained that the homosexual had asked the United States to grant him political asylum, since “he had experienced bad-treatment in the past”. He noted that in Russia “the situation of relations with gays has become worse and more and more Russians are seeking asylum”. In addition, there is no wide access to necessary treatment in Russia.
