The Liberal Islamic Association has come out in support of same-sex marriages and confirmed their opinion with quotes from holy books. “The central verse in the Quran dealing with partnership and its general sense and use says: ‘And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.’ (30:21),” their statement reads. The group says that because the original text does not refer to marriage as a unity of a man and a woman, so there is no need to limit the definition of marriage only to opposite sex unions and gay couples deserve marriage too. “The fathering of offspring is not named as the (primary) spirit and purpose of a partnership in the verse,” they said, “Because ‘Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one’s] hope.’” The group, based in Germany, is arguing that Chancellor Angela Merkel should introduce marriage equality.
