As we already reported, the number of cases of racism in the LGBT community is shocking and most transgender women killed in the USA withing last 2 years were women of color. That is why the racial minorities started to demand adding black and brown colors to the traditional rainbow flag as a symbol of welcoming people of color in the queer community as well.
The group More Color More Pride says in statement that they respect the rainbow flag as the equality symbol invented by Gilbert Baker, who passed away recently, aged 65, but the community has changed since the flag was invented and the symbols need to change too. The new design of the flag has been made by Tierney, an ad agency based in Philadelphia. The company made the design and approached the Office of LGBT Affairs. Speaking to Philadelphia Gay News, Amber Hikes, the city’s director of LGBT Affairs said: “Seeing an image like this flag instils so much pride in me as a queer black woman… When I see the flag, I feel like I see myself.”
