Malta’s president Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca has pledged to push a marriage equality bill as soon as she can. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was elected for a second term. On Monday, the first bill for “equality in marriage” will be discussed as the top priority of the newly-elected government. President Coleiro Preca said that the move for civil rights would build on the PM’s first successful term which saw the first budget surplus for 30 years. It is a very conservative country where it was illegal even to divorce till 2011. Civil unions for same-sex couples were legalized in 2014. Malta recently became the first country in Europe to ban “gay cure” therapy. The island nation made history as it passed a bill which meant that any medical professional found guilty of practising the ‘conversion’ methods could be imprisoned for it.
