The most iconic lesbian of our time who we all adore, used to be bullied by her celebrity colleagues when she came out 20 years ago. In 1997 she appeared on the cover of TIME magazine and gave an interview to the Oprah Winfrey show, telling the whole truth about being attracted to women. The move left her without a sitcom and some religious groups started to attack her. She lost her career on a mainstream TV. “The bullying I endured [in Hollywood] after I came out made up for the lack of it during my childhood,” she told, “I moved out of L.A., went into a severe depression, started seeing a therapist and had to go on antidepressants for the first time in my life.” She turned angry and aggressive after losing everything she had. Sh felt lonely and unfairly abused just for the way she was. But she overcame it and became one of the most successful TV personalities of our time. “Anger and aggression weaken you, because they take so much energy to hold in place,” she said. “But kindness is a strength [that] makes you more serene.”
