Two North Dakota legislators have criticized a library’s promotion of the LGBT-themed books. The irritated customers contacted the representatives. The library had also posted a picture of the display on Facebook with the caption ‘Looking for the perfect last days of summer read?’ The representatives assumed that there is no problem with books themselves, but displaying the books like this and promoting them turns reading into ‘sexual ideology’. They recommend to promote LGBT-related books among other materials which are not related to the issues of sexuality. The library’s Director, Sandra Hannahs, responded to the email acknowledging the ‘conservative mindset’ of West Fargo and it was ‘insensitive’ for the library to promote the display on Facebook. Hannahs also went on to explain she had talked with staff about their use of Facebook. She said they needed to think about the importance of ‘greater thoughtfulness and respect to the community’.
