Ellen DeGeneres is one of the most famous lesbians of our time. But when she came out there was almost nobody to compare her with just because talking about same-sex relationships was a kind of taboo. Her show now breaks all the ratings but she remembers that 14 years ago nobody wanted to air it, daytime or nighttime, does not matter. She believed that nobody would like to see a lesbian on TV. That is why there was one condition she must have followed – never to mention her relationship status and never to say ‘we’. But now everybody knows that Ellen is married and when she says ‘we’, she means herself and her wife Portia. And even though tabloids are rumoring of their divorce, this ‘we’ exists and and Ellen talks about it with no fear.
Ellen decided to come out in real life before her character did on the show, with interviews on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Diane Sawyer and the cover of TIME Magazine. “It’s something I decided I wanted to do and thought it would be wonderful for me as a result,” Ellen told Oprah at the time. “I never thought it was anybody’s business, who I am and who I am with. And then I realised since I had this secret that worried me all the time that it made it feel like something was wrong.”
