Supergirl’s Maggie Sawyer stood up to her anti-LGBT father

Supergirl’s Alex Danvers and Maggie Sawyer are two female characters in love and fans love it. Last year, Alex – played by Chyler Leigh – came out as a lesbian, with fans praising it as one of the best coming out stories in years. The actress wrote that shew is very happy that her character inspires and motivates the watchers. And at the end of the last season, after Alex was kidnapped and nearly died, the girls told each other their first ‘I love you’ and got engaged by the end of the season. But not everybody was ready to support their love, including Maggie’s own dad who left her stranded by the side of the road when she told him she liked girls. After encouragement from Alex, she rings her dad and invites him to their wedding shower – but he fled seeing the girls locking lips. She chases him down, returns a picture of her which he kept in his wallet, and lets loose with a self-affirming, cathartic tirade. “You showed me that I’m not that scared little girl in that picture anymore. I am an adult woman and I’m happy in my own skin, and I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by people who value and cherish me. I finally understand: I don’t need you to see me or to get me, or to even like me. I don’t need anything from you. I’m already good.” And handing back the photo, she leaves, before telling Alex in the very next scene: “You’re all the family I need.”
