Drag queen musical collects awards

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie will be opening at the Apollo Theatre in November, after a critically acclaimed run at Sheffield Crucible. It will tell a story of a 16-year-old boy who dreams to be a drag queen. With support from his friends and loving mum, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and moves to the dream. The musical by Jonathan Butterell and written by Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae won best musical production at the UK Theatre Awards last week and the leading actor John McCrea was named the best musical performer. These two honours represent just reward for a production which is definitely breaks barriers and tackles stereotypes. “Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield,” the musical’s bio begins. Jamie doesn’t quite fit in. “Jamie is terrified about the future. Jamie is going to be a sensation,” it concludes, magically. And it promises: “Fairy tales really do come true.”
