Lawmakers from Penang in Malaysia have started to fight for transgender rights. The main goal of this fight is these rights became recognized on the official level.
Teh Yee Cheu is currently leader of the Transgender Committee in Penang. The main requirement of the Committee is that all the issues of transgender representatives must be reported on the official documents. It can lead to the governmental recognition. Among such common issues of transgender people are medical treatment, gender neutral public places (restaurants, bars, night clubs) and police persecution. It should be remained that set of symposiums about transgender issues were already held in 2016.
As we know it is unlawful in Malaysia to be transgender. Transgender committee treasurer of Penang, Cheah Kah Peng, assumes that all the findings are important for people because they involve human rights on the basic level. “For the transgender people it is really important from us to show a deep understanding and acceptance of their rights”, say representatives of Transgender Committee.
