Pearl Mackie is sure that Doctor is gender-fluid

Doctor Who star Pearl Mackie has responded to the backlash against that fact that the Doctor’s new incarnation is female. The show currently features Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor, but after Christmas he leaves and it has been confirmed that he will be replaced by an actress Jodie Whittaker. “Time Lords are gender-fluid – that was established ages ago. Why can’t the Doctor be a woman? I think it’s important, and I think if people are frustrated by that then, I don’t know, maybe they need to update their views,” says Mackie who also made history by playing the first out lesbian companion of the Doctor. Of her own role she said: “It was just part of who she was, and not the most interesting part. For people to see a mixed-race woman, a woman of colour, being completely comfortable with being a lesbian on a global prime-time series is phenomenally important. People have come up to me and said that watching Bill helped them come out to their families. I didn’t anticipate that it would ever have that kind of impact.”
