Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church previously said that gay people should have been stoned to death if they do not repent and Orlando tragedy was nothing but ‘good news’ for him. As he said then: “The good news is that there’s 50 less paedophiles in this world, because, you know, these homosexuals are a bunch of disgusting perverts and paedophiles. That’s who was a victim here… just a disgusting homosexuals at a gay bar.” Anderson, who was previously banned from entering South Africa on an evangelising trip, has announced via Youtube that he is going to hold a week-long ‘mission’ in Jamaica which has already been supported and promoted by the local press. The Jamaica Gleaner posted a one-sided and uncritical interview with Anderson in which he insists it is “a lie” to say he celebrated the Orlando shooting. To his subjective opinion it might not be celebrating, but saying that someone’s death is a good news and they deserve to die is definitely not less sinful according to the Bible than homosexuality. True Christians show compassion and never condemn people even if they don’t support some aspects of their life. God does not hate anyone, He hates sins (but the question about what a sin is remains disputable), but not sinners. This is what the pastor should preach first of all.
