Peppermint becomes first trans woman with the leading Broadway role

The Drag Race season 9 star has become the first trans woman to create a main role on Broadway musical Head Over Heels featuring hits of The Go-Go’s and Belinda Carlisle’s solo hits. Inspired by Sir Philip Sidney’s Arcadia, the musical is described as an ‘Elizabethan love story turned on its head’. Other cast members include Rachel York (Disaster!), Jeremy Kushnier (Cirque Du Soleil), Alexandra Socha (Spring Awakening) and Ricardo Zayas (Hamilton). Gwyneth Paltrow has been confirmed as a show producer. The Go-Go’s were the first all-female band wrote their own songs and played their own instruments. They were the first of this kind to hit the charts on the worldwide level. James Magruder is the writer (adapted from an original book by Avenue Q Tony winner Jeff Whitty) and Tony winner Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) is the director. Head over Heels will play at the Hudson Theatre, with previews beginning on 23 June.
