Belle Brockhoff is representing Australia in the Winter Olympic Games 2018 in South Korea and she is a snowboarder, as well as Simona Meiler, whom we previously mentioned in our Olympic digest. Moreover, the women are going to compete against each other the following Monday. But if in sport they are rivals, they have quite similar points of view on life. They both have taken part in Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi, Russia, and both condemned the discriminatory anti-gay policy in the country. But if Meiler holds the principle of neither confirming nor denying her LGBT identity (it is her right and it deserves respecting), Brockhoff used Sochi Olympics as an opportunity to speak out. In the country where people are persecuted for just being who they are it is necessary not to hide, people need someone to stand up and say ‘Yes, I am a lesbian and I am proud of it,’ Belle believes. And it was exactly what she did 4 years ago. “I want to be proud of who I am and be proud of all the work I’ve done to get into the Olympics and not have to deal with this law,” she said then in her coming out speech.
