LGBT Olympians digest 2018. Cheryl Maas

Cheryl Maas is a snowboarder representing the Netherlands in the Winter Olympic Games 2018 in South Korea. These are the third Olympic Games in her career. She is married to former international snowboarder Stine Brun Kjedlaas from Norway and they are the mothers of 2 girls named Lara and Mila. She competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, finishing 11th at the halfpipe in which she is specialised. She started snowboarding in 1993. In 2004, she played in the snowboard movie Dropstitch. As she qualified for the Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi, Russia, she condemned the decision to hold the major sport event in the country which is known for its biased attitude to the LGBT community and having discriminatory anti-LGBT laws. Speaking about the lack of openly LGBT snowboarders and possible reasons why they might stay in closet she once revealed: “There are different reasons for everyone but I think people are scared their sponsors won’t like it or their images will change. These days it’s all about social media and how many likes you can get. In my opinion, if you are good looking and gay maybe the guys wont follow you anymore and be like ‘fuck this person’. I don’t know why everyone is so scared about someone being gay but I also think it’s no ones business, they should do their thing and enjoy life.”
