Coco creators expressed gratefulness to same-sex spouses accepting the Oscar

Coco, a film which details a Mexican boy’s journey into the Día de los Muertos underworld, won the Best Animation award at Oscars 2018. Adrian Molina, Coco’s co-director, and Darla K. Anderson, Coco’s producer thanked their husband and wife. Respectfully. Both of them are married to the people of the same sex. They also expressed their love for Mexico’s “endlessly beautiful culture and traditions.” Acknowledging the stark lack of diversity in the film industry, the creators reiterated the importance of representation, and why it is especially important to make animated films for children more diverse.“With Coco, we tried to take a step forward toward a world where all children can grow up seeing characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do,” Coco’s director Lee Unkrich said, accepting the award. “Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.”
