Bisexual actor Nico Tortorella has married his long-term partner Bethany Meyers. She is a woman but what they definitely did not want was a traditional, stereotypical wedding with a bride and a groom playing the roles chosen for them centuries ago. They wanted to tackle stereotypes. Nico said that he loves Bethany since he was 17 and that is why he wanted to unite with her in a magical way.“We’ve been boyfriend and girlfriend, boyfriend and boyfriend, girlfriend and girlfriend, no friends, and all friends,” he said describing the spectrum of relationships with his now-wife. Gender roles are not about them, Bethany confirms. She dated both men and women and it helped her to understand that marriage comes from love, and love means freedom, not a custody, so it is wrong to think that marriage is a limit. Marriage is crossing all the existing boarders, but with a special person by your side. “Who would drop their last name? Who would walk down the aisle and who wait at the altar? Who would pay for it? The idea of marriage started to shift. It no longer felt patriarchal, it felt equal,” Bethany remembers her own thoughts when she thought about marrying a woman as an option. She married a man but it was still equal and not strictly determined, exactly as she wanted. “And I finally began to view it for what marriage was at its deepest core. The union between two people who love each other, who wanted to build their foundation of future generations together, who wanted the legal rights to wed and be recognised by the state as a single unit,”she said.
