Cynthia Nixon has revealed she would legalize marijuana in New York if elected as Governor, she believes it would end drug-related racist conflicts across the state. The actress argued that 80 percent of New Yorkers arrested for marijuana are black or Latino even though white people use it no less frequently. And if marijuana is legal there will be no reason to put people of color in jail for something white people are mostly forgiven for. “The simple truth is, for white people, the use of marijuana has effectively been legal for a long time. Isn’t it time we legalize it for everybody else?” said Nixon. She is partly right because smoking marijuana indoors is legal, possessing it is not. And black people are oftener caught possessing drugs, but it still does not mean that they commit such a crime oftener. “The consequences follow people for the rest of their lives, making it harder to get jobs or housing, and for non-citizens, putting them in the crosshairs for deportation. In addition to ending the racist war on drugs, regulating and taxing marijuana would generate hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue for our people, and create important agricultural opportunities for our state,” added the queer Governor hopeful.
