Mike Pompeo’s candidature is approved

A Senate committee has approved President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo instead of Rex Tillerson, even though Pompeo discredited himself with his past homophobic remarks which he refuses to take a responsibility for. The lawmaker attracted anger from LGBT groups earlier this month when he refused to distance himself from his past comments describing gay people as a “perversion,” and has also insisted that he “stands by” his “very clear view on whether it was appropriate for two same-sex persons to marry.” The influential committee backed Pompeo by a vote of 11-9, his potential rival, Republican Rand Paul, dropped his candidature himself which caused a massive backlash from LGBT rights groups. As a GOP lawmaker Pompeo was co-sponsor of the State Marriage Defense Act, a proposed law that would have allowed states to continue to refuse recognition of same-sex unions. He also co-sponsored the Marriage and Religious Freedom Act, which would have issued a right for people to discriminate against LGBT community if their religion dictates them to.
