The owners of Ashers bakery Daniel and Amy McArthur said that they refused to bake a cake that contained a slogan supporting gay marriage which was considered discriminatory in the original court hearing but the couple appealed the decision in every court possible and last week they reached the highest level — the Supreme Court. “Mr. and Mrs. McArthur have been penalised by the state, in the form of the judgment, for failing to create and provide a product bearing an explicit slogan ‘Support Gay Marriage’ to which they have an objection of conscience,” David Scoffield QC told the court. But they never said anything discriminatory against customers and their alleged sexuality. Whether the customer was gay or straight, they would tell him\her\them that such a slogan was inappropriate for them.
