Lyle Shelton is a fierce opponent of LGBT rights, who was a driving force against equality in his roles at the Australian Christian Lobby and the Coalition for Marriage. But now he leaves all these organizations to focus on politics. It has been announced that he will be a candidate in Queensland on the ticket of the Australian Conservatives party – a new right-wing movement set up by Senator Cory Bernardi, who is also known for anti-LGBT views. Bernardi, in turn, stated that people of Queensland needed a conservative alternative. “Lyle brings a wealth of political and campaign experience having headed up the ‘No’ campaign last year that saw millions of Australians stand up against political correctness,” he wrote. The party is occupying an already-crowded area when it comes to the anti-LGBT conservative right, facing off against not only the governing Coalition but also Pauline Hanson’s far-right One Nation party.
