Donald Trump has again failed to issue a traditional proclamation to mark Pride Month. Barack Obama used to mark June as a Pride Month with an official statement for 8 years. Obama’s Proclamations recognised “the fight for dignity and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people”, as well as thankning the Government for “working to broaden opportunity, advance equality, and level the playing field for LGBT people and communities”. But Donald Trump did not celebrate Pride oin the White Hoouse last year and now refuses to do it again. Trump marks June as African-American Music Appreciation Month, National Homeownership Month, National Caribbean-American Heritage Month and National Ocean Month – but LGBT issues were nowhere to be found. The US State Department did issue a statement marking Pride Month, even though the White House refuses to do so. The pro-LGBT Human Rights Campaign has vowed to use Pride Month to launch a “nationwide Summer of Action” across battleground states in the wake of midterm elections that are to take place later this year.
