Collin Martin, a professional soccer player, who is involved in five major professional leagues, has recently come out as gay, It happened on June 29, 2018, right before the Minnesota United’s Pride night game against FC Dallas and coincidentally during the Pride month celebration. By publicly revealing his homosexuality, Martin has become the only active openly gay athlete in MLS. Actually, professional athlete was not the first soccer player in the pro league to come out as gay, but he is the only one, who has made it during the active period of his career in sports. In his statement, the 23-years-old soccer player said: “Today, I’m proud that my entire team and the management of Minnesota United alongside with the rest of the world know that I am gay.” Further on, Martin added: “June is Pride month, and I am proud to be playing for Pride, and to be playing as an out gay man from now on.”
Professional soccer player started his career when he was only 14 years old and has quickly reached a top by signing-on as a homegrown player with D.C. United of Major League Soccer in 2013. Currently, Collin Martin plays for Minnesota United FC and shows good progress. In an interview after Martin publicly came out, MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated: “We admire Collin’s courage, and are proud of him and of the support from the soccer community.” Evidently, teammates and everyone in Major League Soccer have accepted Martin’s revelation with kindness and support.
