Ricky Martin spoke about hiding boyfriends from public for years

The singer and actor portrays Antonio D’Amico, Versace’s partner of 15 years until his death, in FX’s American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. Ricky calls Versace a brave man because he did not hide his sexuality and even introduced his boyfriend to a public without hiding who he was to him. Ricky himself regrets of having no such courage. “Do you know how many lovers I had that I hid from the public that I did not allow anyone to see because I was afraid?” Martin asks a rhetoric question, noting that Versace gave him a lesson on how to be strong and brave to be who you are without fear. But homophobia unfortunately existed then and it exists now. He went on to discuss working with the real-life D’Amico for the role, adding: “He was very generous and he would tell me everything that he was feeling.”
