Carolyn Harris, the Deputy Leader of Welsh Labour and Member of Parliament for Swansea East, was testifying in court against her former office manager Jenny Lee Clarke, who is charged with fraud. She allegedly forged the MP’s signature to give herself a £2,000 raise in 2015 and to decrease her working hours. But the defense lawyer said that the MP herself has not always been quite right towards her employee. Defence barrister Stephen Donnelly asked Harris whether she made the comment “Look at your dyke boots” to Clarke while she worked on her. The MP responded that she did not remember such an incident and she had always been an ally of the LGBT community. And even if she said a word ‘dyke’, for Clarke it would not sound offensive because she used it herself. Denying claims that she had outed her aide to colleagues, the MP replied that she was out to her and her colleagues for 4 years when the alleged incident took place. The MP added that she had a “mutually beneficial friendship” with Clarke and that there was a “lovely atmosphere” in her office. Clarke denies charges of fraud and forgery. The trial continues.
