Lawmakers in the Malaysian state of Pahang are considering to make it legal to cane people for homosexuality. Two women in the northeastern state of Terengganu were publicly lashed after the Sharia enforcement officials caught them having lesbian sex in the car. The director of Pahang’s Islamic Religious Department, Mohamad Noor Abdul Rani, welcomed the punishment and said it could spread to his state to show the beauty of the Muslim faith in the state. His department is responsible for passing religious laws, which exist alongside civil legislation in Malaysia’s legal system, so it is in his power to introduce such a law if he wants to. Amnesty International’s Malaysia Researcher, Rachel Chhoa-Howard said that the international community is shocked that such kind of a punishment sill exists, calling it barbarian and draconian.
