Trans woman identified in media under the name Zamira (not a real name) lived in Chechnya and she is hiding every day due to fears of persecution in the Muslim-dominated autonom region of Russia. She says that the international society knows that gay men are strongly persecuted and abused in the Republic, but she has no idea why the media ignore that fact that people represented by other letters of the LGBT acronym are suffering as well. She escaped from Chechnya and us now located in a relatively safe place, but she still wakes up in the middle of the night because of fear she cannot explain, she is afraid to stay alone, even for an hour.
Initially, reports only detailed information about men being kidnapped, tortured and murdered at the hands of Chechen authorities. Yet Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-approved leader of Chechnya, has accused activists of fabricating allegations of abuse—and denied the existence of any LGBT people in the region.
