Man won’t be imprisoned for biting off another man’s ear in a suspected hate crime attack

Martin Gallagher, who was intoxicated at the time, attacked the victim in the toilet of a club in Newcastle because he believed that the man was gay and was looking at his genitals. The attack took place in the club last year in May. The attacker admitted committing the crime and was sentenced to 200 hours of community service. Gallagher will also have to pay £5,000 in compensation to the victim, who was left permanently scarred. The prosecutors believed that the victim and the attacker did not know each other and the attack was completely unprovoked. “At times I have been left demobilized by the sheer stress of it all,” the victim told the court, “I’m still coming to terms with my new reflection and hope for a future to bring better days. That is largely thanks to the tireless work of Northumbria Police, especially from DC Lisa Common who has been nothing but an exemplary figure throughout the proceedings.”
