UN chief praised India for decriminalizing homosexuality

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has addressed members of the UN LGBTI Core Group, which was established in 2008 to oversee LGBT+ rights worldwide, for the first time praising India for finally repealing the colonial-era gay sex ban in September. He said that one of the goals of the UN is to stand up for all citizens regardless of sexuality and there is a significant progress in it in comparison to the past, but there is still a lot of work to be done in this direction. “As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, let me underscore that the United Nations will never give up the fight until everyone can live free and equal in dignity and rights,” he said in the speech. These words of António Guterres were well received by LGBT+ activists, who called the speech inspiring and encouraging.
