Rugby team fights for not deporting a gay player


A LGBT+ inclusive rugby team is fighting to stop their gay teammate from being deported from the UK to his homeland Kenya, where he might be persecuted for his sexuality. Kenneth “Ken” Macharia, who has played for Bristol Bisons since 2015, has had his asylum request rejected by the Home Office, and now his friends are trying his best to make him avoid deportation back to Africa. On Monday (November 18), his teammate Andrew Holmes created a petition calling on Home Secretary Sajid Javid to let him stay, this petition has more than 65000 signatures so far. The web page, which describes Macharia as an “integral” part of the rugby family, whose teammates are deeply concerned about his future. Macharia, who moved to the UK in 2009, said that he was being held in Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre in Middlesex.
