Tessa Thompson responds to her movie being criticized for ‘straightwashing’

Tessa Thompson, who played superhero Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, has addressed accusations of straightwashing after it was not shown in the final edition of the movie that Valkyrie is bisexual, though it is perfectly cear from the comic bools the movie is based on. A flashback scene did make the cut that featured the massacre of Valkyrie’s all-female warrior clan, but the film did not show that Valkyrie had lost her beloved in the massacre. “It wasn’t Marvel or Disney or anyone extracting that because it was an issue… it just was like, that particular moment didn’t make sense in the context of the scene. And there were other beautiful things where you get a sense of her back story,” said Tessa, who is also bi in real life. To her sexuality is not a defining factor, it tells as much about the people as a kind of juice they prefer. Yes, Valkyrie is bisexual, but it is only a tiny part of who she is, and her sexuality is not erased, she has never been called straight or attracted to men only, but she s a superhero, and people should be focused on her saving the world, not on people she hooks up with
