Empire actor Jussie Smollett has been rushed to the hospital after chemical substances being poured on him on the street of Chicago. The two assailants punched the actor in the face, wrapped a rope around his neck, and poured a chemical substance on him. The attack is believed to be homophobically and racially motivated. The openly gay actor was attacked at approximately 2am in E. North Lower Water Street on January 26th. A Chicago Police Department spokesperson confirmed that the incident is currently investigated and the detectives view it as a hate crime. The actor’s condition is currently described as good, he is now actively helping the police with the investigation of this incident. The actor came out as gay in 2015. Now he is mostly known for his portrayal of gay musician Jamal Lyon in the Fox drama series Empire. The character’s sexuality was in part inspired by the show’s creator, Lee Daniels. Smollett began his career as a child actor, starring in The Mighty Ducks (1992) and North (1994).
