LGBT+ media charity GLAAD has announced it will give a rare award marking the 30th anniversary of GLAAD Awards in May 2019 to the qu8een of pop music and a long-term gay icon Madonna. The LGBT+ icon and pop star will receive the Advocate for Change Award to recognize her longtime activism for the LGBT+ community, GLAAD revealed on February 5th. GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement on the group’s behalf has praised Madonna’s commitment to LGBT rights both in the USA and worldwide, including the HIV crisis—in 1989, she included a leaflet raising awareness about the virus and safe sex in every copy of her album Like a Prayer. Ellis noted that the music of Madonna has been inspiring and empowering for the queer community for decades. Madonna started the year with a performance at Stonewall Inn to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1969 riots that gave birth to the modern LGBT+ rights movement.
