Certain faith leaders believe LGBT-inclusive education to be necessary

More than 50 members of religious organizations, campaigners and education leaders have signed an open letter asking the Department of Education (DfE) to urge the government to take action for LGBT-inclusive sex and relationships education to be launched nationwide. The open letter, published in The Guardian on February 11th states that if LGBT-inclusive education is optional then it puts LGBT students at risk, and there is no need to increase the risk factors for them, as homophobic, transphobic and biphobic bullying at schools is already very common. The letter expresses support for providing LGBT+ education in both primary and secondary schools to raise awareness and to combat discrimination among pupils and the teaching staff. The letter comes as a gay teacher who developed the No Outsiders project in 2014 to educate children about acceptance faced protests from a group of parents at his Birmingham school for teaching students about LGBT+ issues.
