Years & Years singer Olly Alexander has spoken out, after choosing Ariana Grande as a Manchester Pride headliner caused a massive online backlash because she is not queer. A viral Twitter post had accused Ariana Grande of “exploiting” LGBT+ fans by headlining the Manchester Pride festival, where weekend tickets are currently on sale on a twice higher price than it used to be before the name of the headliner was revealed. Olly Alexander, who is due to perform at the Pride event a day before Grande, has now weighed in on the issue. He said that he would like to see more queer headliners, but sexuality is not an issue they are selected by (otherwise it would be discrimination, and discrimination is the main issue Pride events are made to tackle). As for ticket prices, he highlighted that a part of ticket fees is to be given to charities, so being able to give more to charities is actually great.
